Fantastic place! From the outside it looks like an iffy place, but this place is definitely worth the stop in for good quick Mexican food! They are open late so great for late night cravings! There are only a few tables inside to eat in, did not have a problem with that. The food came out fairly quick, good thing too because I was hungry. The pork burrito is what I got and steak taco combo what my friend got, both were excellent dishes and satisfying! Now that I know what they offer I will definitely continue eating here and at their other locations!

I come to this spot me every time I come to the Val Air and it never disappoints me. The lengua tacos have to be the best thing there.

This place never disappoints! They offer a wide variety as well. They have what they call "Super Fries" which are kind of like nachos but instead of chips they have French fries. Taco salads are great as well, smothered burritos and my personal favorite the chicken quesadilla!! Best I've ever had! They offer huge portions at a really reasonable price! Two people under $20.00, and more than likely leftovers!

Let me start out by saying I LOVE Abelardos... Just NOT this location. I have eaten all 3 in Des Moines numerous times and this one always disappoints. I keep telling myself that that I won't go back to this one and to drive the extra few miles to the Ingersoll location. Tonight my girlfriend and I got two burritos and the shells were both not only old but the inside was nothing but pico and a few pieces of shrimp on hers and on mine (fish) was two cold pieces of previously cooked breaded shrimp which seemed microwaved and was soggy. Not going back to this location ever again!

This place is super. To the point that, over a 5-week period working on a project in Des Moines, I probably ate lunch there 15 times. In what I took to be a good sign, I was very often the only gringo in the place. Other reviewers have praised their burritos. I never got them myself, but my co-workers did, and they thoroughly enjoyed them. I came for the tacos, usually the fish tacos but sometimes I mixed in other ones too (my favorite after the fish was cabeza). The tamales were a good accompaniment, but you'd probably be disappointed if you tried to base your meal off of them. Here's a tip: raid the salsa bar. Several different kinds of very good salsas, plus the carrots and jalapenos in vinegar are very, very tasty. There is very little seating available, as almost everyone takes out. The food is very good, and the prices are ridiculously low. This is one the best values to be had in Des Moines.

So the place is a dive inside. But the salsas are the Best In Des Moines. I made the mistake and ate somewhere else tonight closer to my home, when i was eating at the "other place" I could only think "I wish i had went to abelardos" They take phone in orders , so my little girls rice will be the right temperature when we arrive, and they always give her a 1/3 cup of water. She loves the rice, and I LOVE the green chili burritos, lots of spice! the breakfast burritos are super good, make sure to tell them to put the "green" salsa inside the burrito while they are making it, you will be happy you did. I am sorry for not reviewingthis place earlier, and i am sorry for trying the new place i did tonight, instead of going where i know the food is good.

Looks like a rinky dink taco bell from the outside but don't they say it's what's on the inside that counts? What comes out of there are ginormous portions for such a cheap price...and it's AMAZING & authentic!! They seem to have endless combinations or you can get pretty much anything ala carte. The salsa bar is great too and they provide all the to go containers for them that you could want. It's small in there and seating is limited so I recommend you just get it to go. They also have a drive thru. I recommend the burrito de carne asada.

I go to Abelardos once or twice a week. It's fantastic. Everything is made fresh and it shows. You can watch them preparing big slabs of beef and pork in the back of the restaurant. I generally get the #2 (two tacos w/ rice and beans). It's a healthy portion of food and at lunch it's only $5. The nachos are also really great. The marinated pork dishes are delicious. Some of the best fish tacos in town. Even their hot sauces are homemade and add a lot of flavor. Abelardo's is open 24-hours. It can get busy at times and so it may take a few minutes for them to prepare your food, but it's worth it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
